Alaskan Cruise
Holland America - ms Nieuw Amsterdam
USS Robert E. Lee SSBN 601 Reunion Cruise
Glacier Bay Inside Passage Cruise
September 16 - 23, 1999

My wife and I (Tim & Lynda VeArd, ETN2(SS)
NavET, Blue 65-70), love going on cruises and have always dreamed of doing one to
Alaska. We organized this cruise after talking to Sam Colt (MMCM(SS), Blue
M-Division, 70-74). Sam went on this same cruise the year before and really enjoyed
it. Sam put us in touch with his friend, Martena Shaw, a travel agent who works
directly with the Navy in Everett. We worked with Martena to set it all up and
volunteered to serve as her point of contact for our group. Martena also asked us to
serve as hosts and we'll work with her and the cruise line to set up onboard activities
for our group to make this a special occasion for all who go with us.

| Cruise itinerary: |
There are as many dreams of Alaska as there are dreamers.
Thats why Holland America offers not just a single, prescribed way to cruise Alaska,
but a choice. Our classic 7-day round-trip Glacier Bay Inside Passage Cruises leave
nothing to want as they highlight Southeast Alaskas most popular ports: Juneau,
Skagway, Ketchikan and, of course, a full day cruising Glacier Bay.
When explorer John Muir first sailed the Inside Passage he could
hardly tear himself away from the rail for fear of missing some new marvel. "Never
before" he wrote, "have I been embosomed in scenery so hopelessly beyond
description tracing shining waves through fjord and sound, past forests and waterfalls,
islands and mountains...."

Ports of Call |
Vancouver, BC.
|
This spirited, cosmopolitan city is well worth the stopover,
before or after your cruise. Its rich in culture and exotic cuisine, and famously
scenic - laced with rivers and inlets, bordered by the Pacific and back-dropped to the
north by peaks of the Coast Range.
|
The Inside Passage
|
The whole day, you cruise an enchanted waterway, and each vista
surpasses the one before. Your ship threads her sure course past forests, islands and
inlets, surrounded by silence. You glimpse a deep fjord penetrating the wilderness. To the
east the sun glints on snow-capped peaks. An incredible voyage.
|
Juneau
|
Alaskas scenic capital has a Gold Rush story to rival that
of the Klondike. Drop in at the Red Dog Saloon, visit the fascinating Alaska State Museum,
or opt for sea kayaking or a wildlife cruise, salmon fishing or fly fishing. Tour to
Juneaus own glacier, Mendenhall, just out of town.
|
Skagway
|
A frontier town perfectly preserved as the Klondike Gold Rush
National Historical Part. Gateway to the Trail of 98, which you may explore by
helicopter, motor coach or vintage railcar.
|
Glacier Bay
|
Choose your vantage point...at the rail, in a view lounge, on the
private verandah of your Holland America cruise ship...and witness a world still emerging
from the Ice Age - 18 tidewater glaciers in action. Included on every Holland America
7-night Inside Passage cruise.
|
Ketchikan
|
Ketchikan, where the harbor shelters fishing boats and seaplanes.
We offer many options. At Totem Bight State Park, walk through the forest to a replica of
a Tlingil Indian Village. Visit Totem Heritage Cultural Center, home to Alaskas
largest collection of original totems. Go sightseeing to spectacularly scenic Misty Fjords
National Monument. Ketchikans shops overflow with native crafts and original
souvenirs to remind you of your Alaska adventure for years to come.
